Virtualization is another technology; another method of reducing costs by taking a large percentage of hardware costs out of the I.T. Infrastucture and maintenance budgets.

For Small Business there are several open source software solutions that can be deployed without incurring enterprise software licensing fees.

  • Reduced Network I/O
    Inter-server communication overhead can be 'Virtually' eliminated by not allowing the network traffic onto the wire in the first place. If Servers A,B,C need to talk to each other, the virtual network adapter is smart enough to know that the servers are located on the same system and doesn't need to go out the NIC, which frees up network bandwidth for workstations and pc's and laptops.
  • Portability
    Once a PC or Server are virtualized, the systems can be migrated to any other compatible hardware platform (not your iPhone) without risk of complicated and time consuming re-activation, bare-metal restore or a repair installation, re-patch, and reinstall of all the applications.

Thin Computing

Thin Computing is a solution and/or alternative to managing and maintinging fleets of PC's that are prone to mechanical failure, virus and malware infections. Similar to a workstation, the thin client (Terminal) device has a keyboard, mouse and monitor, and connects to a remote desktop to utilize assigned resources, office and database applications without needing an entire PC.

  • Extended workstation lifecycle
    Thin Clients do not write data to local hard drives, eliminating the need for one. In a typical PC or Workstation, hard drives and fans are the mechanical liabilities causing most of the typical PC Problems.
  • Centralized Data Management
    (Users cannot readily copy data to external drives, and data can be backed up / archived from one location rather than have multiple email PST files or MS Office documents in multiple locations that may not get backed up)
  • Remote Workplace and Remote Desktops
    Thin Clients can connect from anywhere with an Internet connection, meaning that it is an excellent way to augment your existing infrastructure or go completely thin, allowing remote access without having to worry about remote data-loss or theft of company data by remote employees or contractors.
